The National Federation of Humane Societies (NFHS) is a voluntary, non-profit, fee-based trade federation, funded by membership fees. Member organizations are animal shelters, animal care and control agencies, state federations, rescue groups and regional and national animal welfare organizations in the United States.
The Federation concept was conceived as a result of several idea meetings, from which committees of interested animal welfare groups refined thoughts on specific aspects of creating a collaborative federation. As a result of the committee recommendations the National Federation was founded in April 2006 by representatives from local and national humane organizations.
A 15 member Board of Directors was elected by the members in April of 2007. The Board of Directors governs the National Federation and work output is accomplished by working committees made up of members. There are currently 7 working committees active on topics including legislative initiatives, corporate policies, best practices, communications and membership, strategic planning and the National Federation's 2020 Vision.
